Fix You- Coldplay

I chose the song Fix You because i feel that it provides a deep connection and relationship to characters' relationships in the novel The Great Gatsby. When listening to this song you feel the deep emotion evoked from the lyrics in this song of sadness and regret. Gatsby himself relates to this song through his quest to rekindle his romance with Daisy. Chris Martin recalls that if you "Lose something you can't replace/When you lose someone you can't replace./ Could it be worse?" Gatsby had lost Daisy years ago and when he realized that he could not replace her and retrieve the days of old which he and Daisy had spent together, he was struck with sadness. This song would integrate perfectly into the portion of this story where Gatsby tries to convince Buchanan that Daisy never in their long duration together loved her. But, When Tom brings to light his alcohol bootlegging business, Gatsby is saddened and embarrassed about how he came by his money and Tom states,"I think he realizes that his presumptuous little flirtation is over." (142) While Gatsby may be disheartened and threatened again by the loss of daisy he thinks of what it would be like to lose her yet again.

Let's Get it On- Marvin Gaye
I believe that this song is a great song would fit perfectly in this novel when Gatsby and Daisy first reunite for the first time in five years. When finally the awkward meeting was over and the two long lost lovers found each other's comfort, "They were sitting at either end of the couch looking at each other as if some question had been asked or was in the air, and every vestige of embarrassment was gone." (94) Daisy and Gatsby have truly reconnected to each other and in essence desire each other more than ever. Gaye sings "We're all sensitive people/ With so much to give, understand me sugar/ Since we got to be/ Let's say, I love you." These lines embody the emotions passing between Gatsby and Daisy at this period in the novel. They have rediscovered each other after half of a decade and could not want to be together more than they do now. They know that they are both sensitive individuals for if they weren't, Gatsby would not have begun his quest to rekindle his love with Daisy.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmWhere are you Going- Dave Matthews Band
The song Where are you Going by Dave Matthews would be a great song to play at the completion of this film. I believe it relates directly to the plights of all the characters in this novel. Most of the characters such as Nick, Tom, Daisy, and Jordan have no idea what they want to do with their lives and Gatsby is the one man with a dream to rekindle his love with Daisy. Matthews sings that "But I do know one thing/ Where you are is where I belong/ I do know, where you go, is where i wanna be." Gatsby's goals are summed up in this passage in that all he desires is to be with Daisy. But, in this song a feeling of being lost in life is also portrayed. Nick no longer knows what his purpose is in life and has no idea what he wants to do with himself and is lost wondering where he will end up going. at the end of the novel Nick exclaims, "so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." (189) life is an upstream battle and while you may not know where you are going, you will eventually find your place.
